Emotional Intelligence: Measuring a Valid, if Elusive, Construct

Seminar by Kyle Killian
Associate Professor, Psychology, York University, Canada

We are hosting Assoc. Prof. Kyle D. Killian from York University, Canada who will give a seminar on emotional intelligence on 19 June, 2008 at 15:00 in A229 (FEASS). The abstract of the talk is below.

Emotional intelligence (EI), a term popularized by Daniel Goleman (1995, 1998, 2001), is an intriguing, though elusive, construct.  Mayer and Salovey (1990) defined EI as the capacities to perceive, understand, and manage emotions and to utilize information about emotions in an adaptive manner.  Researchers have attempted to measure the construct in a variety of ways, often employing a “kitchen sink” approach, tapping numerous constructs that may or may not be directly related to a higher order EI construct. This study examined the psychometric characteristics of a new measure, the Emotional Self-Awareness Questionnaire (ESQ). Regarding incremental validity, the ESQ accounted for 23.5% of the variance in life satisfaction in a regression equation that factored in the Big Five Personality factors and social desirability. In another study, a regression procedure found that emotional self-awareness accounted for 17% of the variance of dyadic adjustment in couples after sexual satisfaction and social desirability had been entered into a regression equation. Issues of reliability and validity will be discussed, and thoughts regarding future research in this area will be presented.
